Natural remedies for health and wellness have been my preference from as far back as I can remember. Wonder why? Blame my mother. ☺️
My mom was such a treasure and is still sorely missed since she went to heaven.
Along with giving me a strong foundation of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as my Savior, my mom also taught me so many other practical and helpful principles for living a healthy and happy life.
I love that my mother had such a thorough confidence in God's Word that it affected how she lived every part of her life. If God said it, she believed it, without question. What a wonderful heritage I have!
The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places;
yea, I have a goodly heritage.
Psalms 16:6
She taught me that God designed our body in a "fearful and wonderful" way, and then provided in nature the resources the body needs to be healthy and strong and to heal when necessary. I took her teaching to heart.
Unfortunately, in our fast-paced modern world, it's all too easy to overlook the treasures bestowed upon us by our Creator. As a Christian and an advocate for natural health, I also firmly believe that God has provided us with everything we need for good health and wellness within the bountiful blessings of nature.
Today, I just want to delve into the profound philosophy that underscores our reliance on natural remedies and how they not only nourish our physical bodies but also contribute to our mental and emotional well-being.
In the weeks and months to come, I will happily share with you some of the natural health remedies that I learned from my mom, as well as those I have discovered from my own research and experiences.
I'll also invite you to share your natural remedies for health issues that you've tried and the results you've experienced, both positive and negative.
Our faith teaches us that God's wisdom is infinite and that every aspect of His creation serves a purpose. This divine wisdom extends to the plants, herbs, and foods that populate our world.
Throughout the ages, human beings have turned to these gifts from God in nature to heal their ailments and nurture their well-being.
And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. ~ Genesis 1:29
The very notion that God has provided us with herbs and foods that contain essential vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients, is an idea deeply rooted in Christian philosophy.
Natural remedies are, in many ways, an embodiment of the belief that God has given us the tools to attain and maintain good health.
In the Bible, we find verses like Genesis 1:29, which underscores the abundant provision of nature for our sustenance and well-being. The Master Designer created both the human body and the food that nourishes it in such a perfect way.
I would go so far as to say that the obvious relationship between the nutritional benefits of food and herbs and the absolute necessity of the balance of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that are found in nature is evidence of God Himself.
It baffles my mind that people can be so deceived to think that humans and the life giving food sources necessary for humans to sustain themselves somehow randomly, yet simultaneously, 'evolved' from nothing over millions of years.
...And I've been accused of having blind faith?!
When I speak of a holistic approach to natural remedies for health, I am not just referring to topical treatments, good nutritional intake, and whole food supplements.
Those are included, of course, but we should also consider that we not only need to nourish our physical bodies, but to also learn how to bring peace and strength to our mental and emotional well-being.
Nourishing the Body
Whole foods and herbs are a rich source of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other essential nutrients. When we incorporate these into our daily lives, we are providing our bodies with the sustenance they require to function optimally.
From the Vitamin C in citrus fruits, the healing properties of ginger and turmeric, and the calming effects of chamomile, these natural remedies strengthen our immune systems, aid in digestion, and assist the body in recovering from illness.
In times of illness or injury, our faith in God's provision is manifest as we turn to nature for healing. Think of a simple remedy like honey, known for its antibacterial properties. The Bible speaks of the "land flowing with milk and honey," reinforcing the idea of honey as a symbol of God's goodness. Honey has been used for centuries not only as a food but as a remedy for wounds, sore throats, and infections.
Peace of Mind
The demands of daily life can take a toll on our mental health. Stress, anxiety, and the constant rush of busy schedules can erode our peace of mind. Here, too, nature provides us with remedies that soothe the soul.
"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give unto you..." ~ John 14:27
"Let the peace of God rule in your hearts..." ~ Colossians 3:15
As Christians, we find comfort in the verses of the Bible that assure us of God's peace. These Scriptures are mostly referring to obtaining peace with God through forgiveness of sin provided by Jesus, as well as the peace we receive through a growing confidence in God's will and plan for our lives.
While those gifts are the most important sources of peace, they are not the only gifts God provides us with for peace and tranquility.
Consider the calming influence of lavender. Its scent, often
used in essential oils, can alleviate stress and anxiety. Chamomile tea, another natural remedy for health, helps relieve anxiety and promote a peaceful sleep.
In utilizing natural remedies like lavender, chamomile, and others, we take advantage of the gifts God designed for our use to maintain a peaceful mind and inner calm.
Emotional Well-Being
Our emotions are a precious gift from God, but they can sometimes become overwhelming. In times of great sadness, natural remedies can help provide solace.
As Christians, we know that God is with us even in our darkest moments. We run to Him first and seek His comfort. In fact, His Spirit is often called The Comforter.
When we suffer loss and experience grief, He is there. The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: (Deuteronomy 33:27). There is no substitute for that peace that passeth understanding (Philippians 4:7). I don't know what I would do without Him!
What many Christians don't realize is that God also provides amazing ingredients in nature to help us with the hormonal and chemical imbalances that our bodies develop in this fallen world that often lead to depression, sleepless nights, and additional stress.
Take St. John's Wort, for instance, a herb recognized for its ability to alleviate symptoms of mild depression and anxiety. That's just one example out of so many. By embracing the natural remedies He has provided, we can find additional solace and strength in times of emotional distress.
I'm always on the lookout for simple, yet effective and beneficial, natural remedies for health issues that crop up in my life. I've discovered some superb options over the years that I have returned to again and again when needed.
I have also learned to pay a bit more for high quality nutritional supplements (which goes against my frugal nature), to get the most bang for my buck in the long run. Poor quality is a waste all the way around.
I look forward to sharing some of my findings with you as time permits.
Blessings,
Angie
